Weegie Shorts

Weegie Wednesday Short Story Competition in collaboration with

The Hospital Broadcasting Service

Launch 14th September 2016

Weegie Wednesday announce ‘Weegie Wednesday Shorts’ – a Short Story Competition in collaboration with The Hospital Broadcasting Service.

The Hospital Broadcasting Service (HBS) is an award winning, totally voluntary organisation that has been providing patients in Glasgow and Paisley with their own dedicated radio channel since Christmas Day 1970.

To celebrate 10 years of Weegie Wednesday, members are invited by HBS to submit a short story, of no more than 1200 words, (minimum length 600 words), excluding the title.

Selected entries will be broadcast over several weeks on HBS and the overall winning author will be announced at Weegie Wednesday's 10th Anniversary celebration on January 18th 2017.

The winning author will be invited to the HBS studio and interviewed on air. He or she will also feature on the HBS and WW website.

Entries must be received by 6 pm on 16th November 2016.

The subject of the short story is open, but writers should be aware that many hospital listeners are being treated for cancer and other terminal illnesses. The NHS has advised that death and dying are not appropriate subjects. Topics should be about life and living, celebrating quirkiness or coincidences, and leaving listeners with a feel good, satisfying ending.

Entries should be submitted to : pmack_uk@yahoo.com as a WORD.DOC or RTF file. Please use a standard font, 12-point type, Times New Roman, Arial, Courier or similar – double-spaced, formatted to A4. Each page must have the title on it and a page number.

No name should appear on the story, but a separate email with your entry should include your name, story title, and your contact details. All entries must be from Weegie Wednesday members. Only one entry per member. The story must be original and not have been published before.

The judging panel will be made up of one member of the NHS, one member of the HBS, and and one other mystery judge.

I hereby warrant to Weegie Wednesday and The Hospital Broadcasting Service that the work submitted is my original work and is in no way whatever a violation of any existing copyright, that it contains nothing libellous or defamatory, and that the work contains no objectionable, obscene or improper material.

I understand that there is no cash prize or promise of publication resulting from this competition.

I give permission for the story to be read aloud and broadcast on Hospital radio in Glasgow and Paisley hospitals, and on the HBS on-line service. I give permission for short extracts to be reproduced under ‘fair dealing’ rules to be used to promote Hospital Radio and or this competition. The competition will follow the ‘fair dealing’ guidelines set out by The Society of Authors, where formal permissions need not be sought. (www.societyofauthors.org).

I understand that my name may be used if my work is selected for broadcast.

The criteria will be strictly observed and the judges’ ruling is final. No communication will be entered into. The winners will be listed on the Weegie Wednesday and HBS websites.
