The speaker for April 19th (we meet from 7.30pm) will be Vin Arthey in a short talk :

DON’T RING US, WE’LL RING YOU…AND HOW TO BE PROACTIVE

Vin Arthey was working as a producer at Tyne Tees TV in Newcastle when he discovered the full story of the Soviet Union’s most celebrated spy, ‘Rudolf Abel’, [the man played by Mark Rylance in Steven Spielberg’s film Bridge of Spies.] Vin will talk about how he would never have become a writer of books if it hadn’t been for the initial suggestion, and the support of a small, specialist publisher and how, once he started writing, opportunities in the world of books, and beyond, began to present themselves.

A short introduction to Vin and his biography of ‘Abel’, (with interesting references to Glasgow), can be found here:

Video and sound recordings of Vin speaking about ‘Abel’, his spying, his family, and the New York trial were made when he visited the United States in 2015 at the time of the Spielberg film premiere. He was a panellist on the case at the Brooklyn Historical Society ( https://www.c-span.org/video/?400022-1/trial-soviet-spy-rudolph-abel )and was interviewed for the International Spy Museum’s ‘Spycasts’ ( http://www.spymuseum.org/multimedia/spycast/episode/the-real-story-of-rudolph-abel-an-interview-with-vin-arthey/ )

There will be copies of Vin’s Abel book for sale…at a very attractive discount.

Vin Arthey is based in Edinburgh and reviews espionage titles for ‘The Scotsman’ and ‘Scotland on Sunday’. He is currently engaged in two ‘Life Writing’ projects, and in archive research for a new biography. He is a member of the Edinburgh nonfiction writers’ group, ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ and as a dyslexic writer is active in his support for Dyslexia Scotland.

Everyone please note: we won't have any questions immediately after the talk - instead please bring any questions and chat afterwards. Look forward to seeing everyone on April 19.
